Leap Motion and HP come together for embedded 3D motion-control technology

When you have two names – Leap Motion as well as computer manufacturer HP team up, you know for sure that you are in for quite an adventure, and this assumption has proven right yet again. This particular deal between both companies is said to have been in development for over a year already, and it marks a significant step in delivering touch-free, intuitive computing to the masses. In a nutshell, this particular agreement will see the Leap Motion Controller come bundled with select HP personal computers later this summer, and will also eventually come to encompass a range of unique HP devices that are embedded with Leap Motion’s technology, although the folks over at HP are keeping mum about such HP devices at the moment.

Not only that, HP’s software, including Airspace which is their app store, will be pre-loaded on Leap Motion-integrated HP devices. The reason behind this move is to offer a tremendous opportunity for the developer community in order to make a mark by garnering an even larger global audience of users. Do bear in mind that this embedding deal is different from the one that Leap Motion announced with Asus, as that was a bundling deal in the past, and it signifies another significant endorsement of Leap Motion’s technology.

What Leap Motion wants to do is this – to deliver 3D motion-control technology to the world without burning a hole in your wallet, and to do so as long as there is a computer in the vicinity, which is why they decided to form a collaboration with the folks over at HP to maximize their chances of fulfilling such a vision.

Leap Motion co-founder and CEO Michael Buckwald, said, “Our focus at Leap Motion is to fundamentally improve how people interact with their devices, and offer as many ways as possible to achieve that vision. The possibilities for innovation are incredible, when you think about what will come from this collaboration between two respected global leaders in their fields – HP, the world’s largest technology company and Leap Motion, creator of the world’s most powerful 3-D motion-control technology.”

Panasonic SC-NP10 wireless speaker

Well, well, what do we have here? A spanking new wireless speaker to persuade those who have always wanted to go wireless in their homes and offices, but never really managed to find the time to do so, not to mention getting the best deal out there? Well, Panasonic has just announced their latest SC-NP10 wireless speaker which was specially designed for the masses as an optimal surround sound system which is extremely suitable for tablet viewing and listening. It will be able to see action with just about any Bluetooth-enabled tablet device, where the Panasonic SC-NP10 will see users prop their tablet instead of taking the traditional docking method, while wirelessly stream music or movie sound. Considering the fact that this is not a “docking station”, it will play nice with a variety of different tablet models as well as sizes.

For example, if your family is split right down the middle when it comes to the kind of mobile operating system that the home uses, you might want to make a beeline for the Panasonic SC-NP10 wireless speaker. After all, it does not matter whether you’re running an iPad or an Android-powered tablet, the SC-NP10 will still work just as well with it. In addition, this particular tablet would tip the scales at 3.5 lbs, making it compact enough to be placed virtually anywhere in the home, whether you want to jive to your favorite tunes in the kitchen, in your bedroom or at the home office, as it gives you the freedom of watching movies from a distance instead of taking up space on your lap that your pet cat would prefer to be on.

Audio quality from the Panasonic SC-NP10 should not be doubted at all, as it utilizes Near Field Stereo Sound in order to produce realistic sound even from a nearby distance. There is a 12-degree slant structure that has been incorporated, allowing it to reproduce stereo sound that is faithful to the original, even when you are listening at a close distance from the device. The SC-NP10 Wireless Speaker will also deliver 2.1-channel Surround Sound in order to produce sound that borders on life-like realism, which is in line with crisp, clear playback for movie sound. There is a 3-1/8 inch integrated subwoofer that delivers robust bass sounds, where it packs powerful sound into a slim wireless speaker system. The inclusion of Bluetooth Re-Master technology for music will also help restore frequencies lost during Bluetooth transmission, so that users get to enjoy an uninterrupted listening experience. The asking price for the Panasonic SC-NP10 wireless speaker stands at $199.99 a pop.

iPhone Recovery Pro – So you Don’t Totally Lose it!

There’s a lot of good and bad that comes with technology, most of it is good, and I love it. But while our smartphones and computers streamline our lives they can certainly complicate them as well.We rely on our SmartPhones and computers for everything, all of our most important information, and then I’m also concerned about our kids, their connection with the world around them may just be too intimate. I love my electronics, don’t get me wrong, but I’d like a tool that keeps everything and everybody safe.

Check out ER-220 SmartPhone Recovery Pro not only does it back up the data you have, but gets you back the things you deleted as well. All of us know the horror of watching the little trash can open and close and then realizing you just made a horrible mistake. ER-220 can be used to recover deleted data from your iPhone quickly and easily, and to display all your information on an intuitive interface residing on your Mac. Being able to see deleted data… that’s a very good thing.

The software lets you see almost all the existing data on your phone, but best of all, it allows you to recover your deleted stuff including messages, call history, contacts, notes and calendar entries, and the all important iTunes files. Recovery Pro lets you have access to all your phones info, even if you have your phone no more. Recovery Pro also lets you take all your precious information and easily export it to your Mac as a backup file.

The software runs from the Flashdrive, so you won’t need to install a conspicuous file anywhere, and it seems to me that it can not only save you from the trauma of losing your phone or information but more importantly, for those of us that need it, a pretty sneaky way to check up on your kids or spouse.. yeah… I went there. To find out more, or to check out the Windows version, visit enigma-recovery.com Think of it, piece of mind, for under 80 bucks.

Scosche foundIT is a unique item locator

There are some times in life when you are struck with the “senior moments”, which would mean forgetting just where you have placed a particular key, or item in and around the home. Other than your spouse who seemingly have this elephant’s memory, how about getting a little bit of external help from a gizmo? The Scosche foundIT is an item locator that will be accompanied by an app for the iPhone and iPad.

It has been named as a CES 2013 Innovations and Design Award Honoree, and will be able to assist users to keep track of their keys, backpacks, wallets, purses, and other equally portable items by delivering loss prevention push notifications whenever a particular item goes out of range. For instance, misplaced items will result in a loud audible alert triggered on the tag, making it a whole lot easier to locate. You can also set just how far you want to travel from your object before it makes some noise, within a 100 foot radius. You can pick up the Scosche foundIT with two locators for $59.99.

Gold Karat Authenticator

Gold prices have certainly taken a tumble in recent times, which is normally a traditional safe haven for investors to flee to when the rest of the money market is in a mess. Well, I guess life is always a cycle of ups and downs, and the same goes with gold prices, stock value, the works. If you are one who have decided to throw your lot behind gold, you might be interested to pick up the $499.95 Gold Karat Authenticator.

As its name suggests, the Gold Karat Authenticator is a device that is capable of authenticating karat grades of gold. It does so without the need for messy gels, staining chemicals, or dangerous acids that are often employed by other authentication techniques, as the authenticator’s pure gold-tipped electrode is capable of measuring the electromagnetic frequency produced by a tested object using a safe saline solution which in turn functions as an electrolyte. Pure gold will naturally result in zero volts; and its tested karats are indicated immediately by a panel of LEDs, where it displays a range from six to 24 karats. Non-gold, gold plate, or gold-filled objects will be referred to as “NA”.

Sony’s New 4K TVs to Cost Under $7,000, 4K Media Server Coming Summer

4K TVs have a long and windy road to travel before they start selling at an equivalent rate to their low rez counterparts.  And surprisingly Sony is lending a serious assist with that by introducing affordable (relatively speaking to previous generations) 4k TVs.

Today, the company announced that they’ll sell their XBR-55X900A (55-inch) and XBR-65X900A (65-inch) 4K Ultra HD LED TVs for $4,999 and $6,999 respectively.  They’ll go on sale April 21st, where you’ll be able to buy them in store or online.

By no means am I implying that these sets are cheap, but compared to LG’s 4K TV, which costs a head spinning $25,000, or Sony’s Ultra HD 84-inch set that was released last year, it’s a drop in the bucket.  Or at the very least not the price of a brand new mid-sized car.

It’s worth noting that 4K content is relatively few and far between.  So to a large degree buying one of these sets is a bit like “hurrying up and waiting”.  That said, Sony will finally release their next-gen 4k Home Media Player (FMP-X1) this summer, which will ship with 10 4K feature films.  The films include: Bad Teacher, Battle: Los Angeles, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Karate Kid (2010), Salt, Taxi Driver, That’s My Boy, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Other Guys and Total Recall (2012).  Not exactly cinema bliss, but from a visual standpoint let’s just hope they hold up.  Unfortunately, 4K owners will have to wait again until the fall, when Sony’s online delivery system kicks into action.

Sony hasn’t said how much a 4K movie will cost when the service finally goes online in Q3, but I’m willing to wager it will cost more than a Vudu HDX film, which is $6.   Consumers might also be faced with long download times, since 4K films are effectively twice the size of 1080 movies.  However, in the meanwhile, Sony has remastered a number of films on Blu-ray that they say are tweaked specifically for Blu-ray players connected to a 4K TV.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Rocks a Super 16 Sensor for True Film HD Recordings, Ships July for $995

Capturing HD quality video is no problem thanks to a wide array of point and shoot cameras and DSLRs that include the feature.  However, if you want true cinema HD quality you’ll need to look to larger format cameras that are often cumbersome.  Or will you?

Blackmagic says that their new Pocket Cinema Camera can capture “true digital film images” thanks to its Super 16 sensor size, which records video in the CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes formats with 13 stops of wide dynamic range.  And instead of using the costly SSD drives we saw in their last camera, the Pocket Cinema is SD card compatible.  Adding additional flexibility to the mix is an MFT (micro four thirds) mount, meaning you can use your existing lens collection.

The rear of the PocketCinema Camera includes a 3.5-inch LCD display, which offers a live view to monitor your handy work as you record – there isn’t a viewfinder.  That said, the camera’s width is just a tad over 5-inches (128mm) wide, and weighs a mere 355 grams (that’s about 3/4 of a lb).

The Blackmagic PocketCinema Camera ships this July for $995.

The Canine Treadmill Is Perfect For Lazy Dog Owners

The new Canine Treadmill from TheFancy touts itself as a dog-walking solution in places with inclement weather conditions, but we know the truth: it’s perfect for lazy dog owners who don’t want to get up off the couch!

When you just can’t tear yourself away from Game of Thrones, simply power up this “whisper-quiet” dog exercise machine and let your pup take itself on a walk. (“Most pets will benefit from 45 minutes of moderate activity,” the site advises.) The treadmill is suitable for dog breeds that weigh in at 60 pounds or lighter.

The Canine Treadmill’s sturdy rubber belt is soft on your pet’s paws; meanwhile, side rails keep dogs’ attention forward. You can adjust the treadmill’s speed, distance, and incline with simple controls. (See more information in the included instructional guide).

The machine uses a 1 hp motor and has a 47 1/4? L x 17? W running surface with 0-9% incline. It operates at speeds from 0.5 to 8 mph, plugs into an AC adapter and is also equipped with a safety on/off switch and a recessed treat holder.

Unfortunately, the convenience of the Canine Treadmill isn’t cheap: the exercise machine will run you $1,850. You’ll also have to figure out how to let your dog go to the bathroom.

Taylor Toys POWER UP Electric Paper Airplane Conversion Kit Review

There are things you do because you must — like pay the electric bill and buy car insurance. But the things you do because you can are much cooler — like adding an electric motor to a paper airplane. Hence the reason for Taylor Toys POWER UP Electric Paper Airplane Conversion Kit.

What $14.99 buys you is obvious once you’ve opened the cardboard box; a green battery compartment that holds three “AA” batteries; a power module that consists of a carbon fiber rod with a rechargeable motor at one end and a propeller at the other (aprox 8-1/2” long); and an extra propeller. There’s also a nice little instruction booklet, should you choose to ignore the scan code that’s on the side of the battery compartment, which shows how to make a paper airplane that will work well with the kit, and it’s worth trying out instead of just making one like you would normally do. I’ve made paper airplanes at one time or another — so while I don’t feel compelled to follow the directions provided for turning a standard 8-1/2 x 11 or A4 sheet (20lb/80GSM respectively) into an example of gravity versus airflow dynamics, I think that this time it won’t hurt to follow Taylor Toys’ recommendations.

With my paper airplane now constructed, I inserted a set of “AA’  batteries into the battery compartment. But before I power up my paper airplane, I’ll test it for stability by giving it a go so it can do what it’s supposed to…which is to fly. It does for a couple of seconds before nose-diving to the ground. I dust it off and continue.

The power module has clips that hold onto the front of the paper airplane: the rod runs along the length so that the propeller is free at the other end. Now comes the tricky part because you have to cut elevator tabs at both of the ends by the propeller. What you do is measure 1” across from each end and then cut up to that point — a very sharp, small pair of scissors works best here, tearing instead won’t cut it (ouch, yes one of my worse puns). You can do this with the kit in place or before. Then both of the elevator tabs are bent up. The wings must also be inspected prior to flight for symmetry. Bet you didn’t think that there was so much involved in flying a paper airplane!

So now for the real thing. Holding the paper airplane in my right hand, I pressed the battery compartment’s “nozzle” against the corresponding socket on the power module — again, I have to stress taking this slow so you don’t end up pushing the paper airplane’s “nose” in. Taylor Toys says to hold this for no more than 20 seconds (and to let the motor cool for at least 2 minutes before recharging for another flight), but realistically if you count to 20 and end up going over by a few seconds, nothing bad will happen. That’s how I did it.

Charging up the motor starts the propeller going as soon as contact between it and the battery compartment is made.  By itself, the motor can run the propeller at what seems full speed for over a minute, then it starts to decrease in power as it continues to run for about another minute plus a few tens of seconds. Granted this is really an unfair comparison, since the weight of the paper airplane, the angle of your launch, the wind and other factors will influence the length of time the propeller can propel your airplane. Also, because the propeller starts right away, you have to avoid the impulse to launch the plane immediately.  And expect to have a few sheets of paper available because the first paper airplane that you make probably won’t be your last that day.

With the propeller spinning, I gave the plane a softball-like lob forward only to watch it do a kamikaze into the dirt. I recovered it, let the propeller stop spinning on its own and made a minute adjustment to the elevator tabs so as to correct for this (info in the booklet tells me what to do).

I tried again and the paper airplane flew on its own — looking absolutely cool with the sound of the propeller making a mild “swishing” sound. The paper airplane’s maiden voyage lasted a bit over 10 seconds before it hit the ground. I was able to smooth the plane out and fly it an additional 2 times before deciding that it was time to retire it for a newer model (paper is cheap, after all). I did find that as the batteries “aged,” the strength of the motor had less “oomph” than it did when the batteries were fresh. With fresh batteries in the compartment, I was eventually able to get my flying time to average 20 seconds and more — and once quite a bit longer, although it was pretty obvious that the wind had decided to chip in and keep the plane airborne that time.

Bottom line: Making a paper airplane can be entertaining, but not for very long. Converting it for powered flight makes it way more fun and for way more time. Thank you, Taylor Toys POWER UP Electric Paper Airplane Conversion Kit.

The Phantom 4KFlex Digital Cinema Camera is More Than Meets the Eye (video)

The Phantom 4KFlex Digital Cinema Camera is More Than Meets the Eye (video)

It’s common knowledge, the love I have for massively high–ridiculously sharp high resolution images. I speak on this fact in several of the display pieces and articles I’ve written here on GR. With each passing day I feel the tech world moves ever further away from 1080p as the accepted standard. In the immortal words of The Joker–everyone’s favorite sociopath, “This town needs an enema!” Maybe not literally, but the tech space needs some readjusting. Change is good, ask any Taoist!

Speaking of which, here’s something different and retina searing. The Phantom Flex4K is a new digital cinema camera capable of snatching images at 1000 frames per second in stunning 4096 x 2160. Check out the video above. This camera turns slow-motion into something truly majestic where every little detail is captured in jaw dropping detail. Detailed movements such as acrobatics, martial arts, sporting events and things like explosions, car crashes and the like will be this new behemoth’s stock in trade. The digital camera uses a Super-35 CMOS sensor for 12 stops of dynamic range and reaches speeds of super smooth 2000 frame per second.

The Phantom Flex4k can be had for an impoverishing $109,900 as a nearly bare unit. Add on some much-needed options and accessories and it and hits upwards of $164,900.

Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 17-Inch Laptop Review

Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 17-Inch Laptop ReviewToshiba Satellite L875-S7108 17-Inch Laptop ReviewReviewed by Shawn Sanders on Apr 9Rating: 3.5The Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 is a fine consumer level mobile computing option. It's low range jack of all trades with nor real specialty. But it will do two things: keep you entertained and maintain your productivity.

We have another mobile computing device on our hands, dear readers. Our last time out was with the handsome and cool Sony VAIO S Series laptop. It was an elegant and slim solution that dished out 1080p by default like it was the common standard for such a device. While that “lappy” featured a 15 inch display window, what we have here today trumps that quite nicely. Toshiba has offered up their 17 inch Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 in all its Windows 8 glory, for our fine scrutiny. So let’s begin.

The Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 is a very standard laptop in appearance. Toshiba dubs the physical description as “Fusion Finish in Mercury Silver”. I call it black with chrome accents above and below the full-size keyboard. The outside lid is more light grey than silver and features a feint checkered or single-color plaid pattern with a “TOSHIBA” logo written across the center.  Like the VAIO there is no bulky battery pack protruding outward. But the battery can be accessed and replaced. The DVD drive uses a tray loading mechanic. The entire unit weighs about 6-lbs and is sized at 16.3? x 10.6? x 1.3? (WxDxH). So it’s not a light laptop. The track is also large and easy to reach like the VAIO. We were very pleased to see the buttons are segmented and separated juxtaposed to the VAIO where the entire track pad functioned as such as well as being buttons for left- and right-click. I found zero issues with the trackpad, which also supports multi-touch control. It is very responsive and the traditional layout makes things easy to reach and intuitive.

Whirring beneath, Toshiba has selected a modest compliment of components. The Satellite L875-S7108 is commanded by an Intel i3-3120M processor with a 3MB cache capable of reaching 2.50Ghz. Is makes use of a single 4GB DDR3 memory stick clocked at 1600Mhz. This can be expanded to 16GB across the system’s two memory slots. Storage capacity is in the form of a 640GB 5400RPM SATA drive. Optical ldrive is a mutiformat DVD/RW with double layer support. The aforementioned display is 17.3 inches. It’s a widescreen TruBrite TFT display capable of 1600 x 900 native resolution. It’s LED backlit with no obvious backlight bleed. The built-in speakers are stereo. No Beats Audio here, like we see with many HP laptops. But we do have SRS Premium Sound HD. That said, we still recommend a secondary set of satellite speakers. The webcam and mic setup is sufficient for Skype and Google Chat and such. But noise-cancelling mic is preferred. Connectivity options include 10/100 ethernet RJ-45 LAN port, 802.11b/g/n WiFi network adapter and a memory card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MinSD). There is not an abundance of ports. But we do get HDMI, VGA, mic-in, headphone out, 2x high speed USB 3.0 ports and a single USB 2.0 port with USB sleep and charging capabilities. Powering it all is a 6 cell/48wh Lithium ion battery pack with a charge life of nearly 4hrs.

Essentially I feel the same about the OS as I did all the other Win 8 computing solutions. The OS is awesome. But Windows 8 without a touch interface option is decidedly less awesome. I applaud a lot of the new Windows is doing.  Still it’s more enjoyable and functions better when one can use it the way it was designed, over a touch screen interface to make the most of those pretty apps. The 17.3-inch display is not touch-based. So when using the Satellite L875-S7108 I mostly stay in the familiar desktop mode, which lends itself to keyboard and mouse much better than the tiles.

But Toshiba has also tossed in some bloatware, some of which is less bloaty and actually useful. We have some basics like a book reader, disc creator, HDD protection,  video player, upconvert technology for media and few other forgettables. The upconvert is handy when it works. The video players doesn’t support several major codecs by default and the others can all be replaced with freeware alternatives from the internet, with just a slight bit of digging. Of the useful apps we have Microsoft Skydrive for cloud storage, Windows Essential, Norton PC Checkup and EA Origin for video game purchases and downloads.

Now for the numbers… The margin between the VAIO and the Satellite L875-S8108 does not seem to  match the price difference. An i7 is definitely more compelling than an i3 and the displays are light years apart. While you can get a little gaming done on the VAIO (very little), the Satellite is not a friend to high end gaming. Yet while, the hard drive looks slow on paper (5400rpm) you can see from our ATTO Bench test, it even exceeds the speed of the Seagate solid state hybrid drive we reviewed last month.

The Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 is a very capable consumer level laptop solution. It’s priced nicely for a large 17 inch display laptop.  It’s weight makes it mobile but in a limiting sense. The thing is still heavy so toting it in a carrying bag may over short jaunts is fine. But you won’t want this behemoth on your back or your shoulder for too long. Sit it down and crack it open to find a display that is sufficient but not overly stellar or color-rich, and that resolution leaves a lot to be desired with 1080p popping up everywhere these days. Still, typing and word processing–surfing the internet and the like are handled admirably. The general speed is impressive for an Intel i3 CPU. Moving in and out programs is just as peppy as on the VAIO’s i7. Plus the unit can maintain a wireless signal much better than the Sony VAIO upon waking from sleep mode.

Toshiba has something special for general use computing. It doesn’t do more than it needs for the target market. Plus it’s priced right for its aim. That said I’m no fan of Intel baked-in graphics. Too limiting for my gamer’s mind. But here, it’s perfectly adequate.

Bottom Line: The Toshiba Satellite L875-S7108 is a fine consumer level mobile computing option. It’s a low range jack of all trades with no real specialty. But it will do two things: keep you entertained and maintain your productivity.

Pros

Microsoft Pushes Back Next Xbox Announcement to May 21st

Sony has drawn the proverbial line in the sand having announced their next Playstaion 4, which should hit homes as early as this year. Not to be out done by Hirai Kazuo and Cam-Sony, Microsoft was set to make a similar announcement later this month on April 24th. Things have since changed. The Verge is reporting, the house that Windows built has decided to push back the expected announcement by a full month. Now we’re looking at May 21st and the information sleuths at the Verge are confident this is an accurate rescheduling.

It’s all but confirmed that said event will reveal, at least in part, the details steeped in mystery surrounding the next Xbox console system, codename: Durango. I can’t help but wonder if the move to push things out has anything to do with the Microsoft recent bout with “Always-on Gate”. Just last week Microsoft’s keister was held tenaciously to the fire over comments about Durango requiring a constant internet connection. Of course this is one of the more undesirable features of modern gaming so the announcement left many shocked. Creative Director Adam Orth virtually spat hot fish grease on the fire with his retort of “Deal with it!”, which left Microsfot with egg on its billion dollar face as it issued a formal apology.

While May 21st is sure to reveal some, all will not be known until the more poignant E3 showing in early parts of June. So stay tuned!
